Welcome to WashU Racing, a dynamic student-run organization with a mission to design, build, and race Formula SAE cars.
Our dedicated team of over 80 students, both graduate and undergraduate, collaborates tirelessly to create a competitive racing machine.
What We Do
Each year, we travel to Michigan International Speedway to compete against over 110 other student teams from around the world. Judged by industry professionals and track-tested against other teams' efforts, our car is rigorously evaluated in areas such as design, cost, acceleration, endurance, and overall functionality, culminating in an overall team score which reflects our collective efforts.
Our Process
Before a part can be manufactured and go on the car, it must go through a Final Design Review (FDR), an idea adopted from industry practice. These design review processes allow other members of the team to give input about the part, allowing space for further refinement and improvement.
Design
The design portion contains two phases. The first phase involves research to explore new ideas to improve the car. The second phase constitutes modeling these new ideas in CAD and analyzing their success.
Review
We begin the testing process once we have a drivable car. On testing days, our team’s hand-picked drivers practice driving while the rest of the team collects data and driver feedback on the car so we can make improvements before competition.
Manufacture
After completing the FDR and getting approval for the part from the executive board, the drawings and CAD files are sent to the manufacturing team who devise the part.
